Bennett scrolled the report to the next page. “And as you can see, the message referenced what has to be supernova DSN 2654b, which was first observed here only months ago, and created what the astronomy crew are now calling the Tiger Eye Nebula.”
“The Tiger Eye Nebula?” quizzed the admiral. “What the hell is that?” “I’ve got some friends over at astronomy that are actually calling it the Dragon Eye Nebula—because it’s in the Draco constellation,” Ni quietly mentioned to no one in particular. Ignoring the junior officer’s remark, Bennett explained to the admiral. “Sir, the Tiger Eye Nebula is a gas remnant that was instantaneously formed from the binary system Mu Draconis when the largest of the two stars went supernova.” He gave Ni a glance that silently indicated for her to keep any more dragon-eye references to herself. “The Magellan II was supposedly launched in early AD 2100. If their communication drone was launched within the next ten years from that launch date, then the light from that supernova event would have just barely reached them.” |

“But that’s not impossible?” asked Ryland.
“No, Sir,” answered Bennett. “It’s not impossible, just strange that they would even reference it.”
“Tigers, dragons, whatever. But I need to know how legitimate this thing really is, Commander.” The admiral would be faced with a similar set of questions. “The nature of this whole message from Aqueous stinks to high heaven, but it’s still possible.”
“Aqueous, Sir?” Asked the commander, hearing this name used officially for the first time.
“Yes, Commander, Aqueous. As you know, that’s the name mentioned in the message your group picked up, and we’ve decided to go with that.”
