The Alex Awards are given annually to ten books written for adults that have special appeal to young adults.
Margaret A. Edwards Award
The Edwards Award honors an author and a specific work for lifetime contribution in writing books of enduring popularity with teenagers.
William C. Morris Award
The Morris Award honors a book written for young adults by a first-time, previously unpublished author. The first award will be given in 2009.
Odyssey Award
This award honors the producer of the best audiobook produced for children and/or young adults, available in English in the United States. Co-administered with ALSC.
Michael L. Printz Award
This award honors excellence in literature written for young adults.
YALSA Award for Excellence in Nonfiction for Young Adults
YALSA's newest award will honor the best nonfiction book for young adults; the first winner will be named in 2010.

Caldecott Medal The Caldecott Medal was named in honor of nineteenth-century English illustrator Randolph Caldecott. It is awarded annually by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association, to the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children.
Moonbeam Children's Book Awards Presented by Jenkins Group and Independent Publisher Online, the Moonbeam Children’s Book Awards are designed to bring increased recognition to exemplary children’s books and their creators, and to support childhood literacy and life-long reading. Awards are given in 36 categories covering the full range of subjects, styles and age groups that children’s books are written and published in today.
Scott O'Dell Historical Award In 1982, Scott O'Dell established The Scott O'Dell Award for Historical Fiction. The annual award of $5,000 goes to a meritorious book published in the previous year for children or young adults. Scott O'Dell established this award to encourage other writers--particularly new authors--to focus on historical fiction. He hoped in this way to increase the interest of young readers in the historical background that has helped to shape their country and their world.
The Robert F. Sibert Informational Book Medal award The Robert F. Sibert Informational Book Medal is awarded annually to the author(s) and illustrator(s) of the most distinguished informational book published in English during the preceding year. The award is named in honor of Robert F. Sibert, the long-time President of Bound to Stay Bound Books, Inc. of Jacksonville, Illinois. ALSC administers the award.
The Cyblils Rewards the children’s and young adult authors (and illustrators – let’s not forget them) whose books combine the highest literary merit and “kid appeal.”
The Newbery Medal The Newbery Medal was named for eighteenth-century British bookseller John Newbery. It is awarded annually by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association, to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children.
Children's Crown Awards The Children's Gallery Award, the Children's Crown Award, and the Lamplighter Award are nominee lists of forty new titles each year. They encourage primary, intermediate, and middle school students to read and vote on wholesome and uplifting mainstream books that have been published within the last two years.
The Pearson Prize The Pearson Prize was started as a way to engage Learning for a Cause writers in reading! Writers need to read! But, public school classrooms are often short on books... So, the Pearson Prize is an opportunity for authors and publishers of young adult fiction to donate books to the Learning for a Cause project and in return have them considered for an award.
Charlotte Zolotow Award The Charlotte Zolotow Award is given annually for outstanding writing in a picture book published in the United States in the preceding year. Up to five honor books and up to ten highly commended titles may also be named each year.
Andrew Carnegie Medal The Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Children's Video was awarded for the first time in 1991 to honor an outstanding video production for children released during the previous year. The first recipients were producers George McQuilkin and John Matthews for "Ralph S. Mouse," based on the book by Beverly Cleary.
Coretta Scott King Book Awards honor African American authors and illustrators of outstanding books for children and young adults that demonstrate sensitivity to "the African American experience via literature and illustration." The books - fiction or nonfiction - must have been published in the year prior to the award.
John Steptoe Award for New Talent (at bottom of above page) The award is established to affirm new talent and to offer visibility to excellence in writing and/or illustration which otherwise might be formally unacknowledged within a given year within the structure of the two awards given annually by the Coretta Scott King Task Force. These books affirm new talent and offer visibility to excellence in writing or illustration at the beginning of a career as a published book creator.
Laura Ingalls Wilder Award The award was first given to its namesake in 1954. The prize, a bronze medal, honors an author or illustrator whose books, published in the United States, have made, over a period of years, a substantial and lasting contribution to literature for children.The award was given every five years between 1960 and 1980; it is now given every three years.
Mildred L. Batchelder Award is presented to a publisher for the most outstanding book originally published in a country other than the United States in a language other than English and subsequently translated into English for publication in the U.S. The award was first presented in 1968 to Alfred A. Knopf, Inc., for "The Little Man," written by Erich Kästner and translated from German by James Kirkup. The award is administered by the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC), a division of ALA.
Pura Belpré Awards honor Latino writers and illustrators whose work best portrays, affirms and celebrates the Latino cultural experience in a work of literature for youth. The award is named in honor of Pura Belpré, the first Latina librarian at the New York Public Library and a pioneer in preserving and disseminating Puerto Rican folklore.
Schneider Family Book Award is a new addition to the American Library Association’s Media Youth Awards. The award is donated by Dr. Katherine Schneider, and honors an author or illustrator for a book that embodies an artistic expression of the disability experience for child and adolescent audiences. Three annual awards are presented for the best Teen, Middle School and Children’s Book. The American Library Association administers the Awards, and each recipient receives $5000 and a framed plaque. Winners are announced at the ALA Midwinter Meeting.
Theodore Seuss Geisel Award is presented annually to both the author(s) and illustrator(s) of an outstanding book for beginning readers published in the past calendar year. The winning author(s) and illustrator(s) must demonstrate great creativity to engage children in reading. The first Theodor Seuss Geisel Award was presented in 2006 to author Cynthia Rylant and illustrator Suçie Stevenson for “Henry and Mudge and the Great Grandpas.” The Association Library Service to Children (ALSC), a division of the ALA, administers the award.

Boston Globe-Horn Book Awards Given annually since 1967 by the Boston Globe & Horn Book Magazine. Through 1975 two awards given-for outstanding text and for outstanding illustrations. Since 1976 awards are: outstanding fiction or poetry; outstanding nonfiction; outstanding illustration.
Children's Book Award (Josette Frank Award) From Bank Street Children's Book Committee. Shamus Awards is given by the Private Eye Writers of America to honor excellent work in the Private Eye genre.The award was created by Robert J. Randisi in 1981. Committee members of PWA select nominees and winners, much in the same way as the Edgars are chosen. In general, a "private eye" is any mystery protagonist who is a professional investigator, but not a police officer or government agent.
